Privacy Policy

Astra for iOS · Developer: Patricia (Kat) Luttrell · Effective September 10, 2026 · Website section added October 3, 2026

The short version
  • These statements describe the app. This website logs visits for metrics — see “This website” below.
  • Astra thinks on your iPhone. Replies are generated on-device by Apple Intelligence. Your conversations are never sent to us or to any AI company.
  • Conversations aren't saved. They live in memory while the app is open and are gone when it closes. No audio is ever recorded or stored.
  • No account, no login, no ads, no tracking, no analytics, no third-party SDKs.
  • The app goes online only when you ask for weather or news, and then it sends no identifiers — just the request.
  • One price. Every voice and orb color is included — no in-app purchases, no subscription.

Information we do not collect

Astra does not collect, store, or transmit your name, email, contacts, precise location, device identifiers, advertising identifiers, usage analytics, or anything you say to it. There is no server run by us and no account.

Your voice and Astra's replies

Understanding you. When you talk, your iPhone converts speech to text using Apple's speech recognition. This happens on-device whenever your iPhone supports it. On devices without on-device support, Apple may process the audio on Apple's servers under Apple's Privacy Policy. Astra itself never records, stores, or transmits your audio.

Thinking. Astra's replies are generated on your device by Apple Intelligence. No conversation text, transcript, or persona settings leave your device for this. Astra does not use OpenAI, Anthropic, or any cloud AI service.

Speaking. Astra's voice is synthesized on your device with Apple's system voices.

Bark reactions. If your dog barks, Astra can react. Sound classification runs on-device; no audio is recorded or sent anywhere for this feature.

When Astra goes online

Astra has no built-in web access and makes internet requests only for the two things below, only when you ask, and never with any identifier attached.

When you ask for…What is sentTo whom
WeatherYour location rounded to about 1 km — or the ZIP code you typed in Settings instead of granting location — plus the units. Nothing else.Open-Meteo (a free public weather service) and Apple Maps for looking up the place name.
NewsA plain request for the public headline feed. Nothing about you.BBC News and NPR RSS feeds.

If you ask Astra to search the web, it opens Safari with the search you typed; if you ask for Alexa or an audiobook, it opens those apps. Astra passes nothing about your conversation to them.

Permissions

Astra asks for the microphone (to hear you), speech recognition (to understand you), and location while using the app (for weather, only when you ask). Location is optional — enter a ZIP code in Settings and Astra never asks for it. Nothing is accessed in the background; Astra listens only while it's open on screen.

Data stored on your device

Astra keeps your settings locally on your iPhone: your name, your companion's name and voice, speaking rate and pitch, the personality notes and topics you write, Kids Mode and Sassy Mode preferences, Stay Awake, your ZIP code if you entered one, and your chosen orb color. If you set a Sassy Mode PIN, only a one-way hash of it is stored, in the device keychain, and it never syncs to iCloud. None of this leaves your device. Deleting the app removes all of it.

Purchases

Astra is a one-time purchase from the App Store, processed entirely by Apple — we never see your payment details. Everything in the app is included: every voice and every orb color. There are no in-app purchases and no subscription.

Children and Kids Mode

Astra collects no personal information from anyone, of any age. Kids Mode keeps Astra's language clean and disables Sassy Mode; Sassy Mode (adults only) is protected by a PIN you set.

Astra is a companion, not a professional

Astra is here for company and conversation. It is not a therapist, doctor, or emergency service and cannot help in a crisis. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or, in the US, call or text 988.

This website

This section is about the web pages you are reading now, not the Astra app. The app's behavior is exactly as described above.

When a page on this website is opened, one visit record is sent to the developer for site metrics. It contains the time, the page, the referring site, browser type, device class (mobile or desktop), language, time zone, screen size, an anonymous random identifier kept in your browser's local storage so repeat visits can be counted, and your approximate location — city, region, and country — looked up from your network address by a third-party service (geojs.io). Your network address itself is not stored in the visit record, your device's GPS is never requested, and no name, email, or account is involved. The record is delivered to a private workspace channel (Slack) that only the developer can read. It is not sold, shared, or used for advertising.

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, nothing is logged. You can also block scripts for this site or clear this site's data in your browser to remove the identifier. The hosting provider (Amazon CloudFront) may keep standard server logs as any website host does.

Changes to this policy

If a future version changes what Astra does with data, this page will be updated and the effective date above will change.
